Restoran O&S for authentic Penang Chee Cheong Fun

The Penang version of steamed rice rolls with a tangy sauce.

Chee Cheong Fun (steamed rice rolls) is a dish that’s common in many places in the Klang Valley.

Most versions found here are of the central region type, where the sweet sauce is either watery or the rolls are served with curry or Yong Tau Foo.

True blue Penangites however, will argue that their version of Chee Cheong Fun is still the best. The version served up north in the Pearl of the Orient is ultra-simple.

Just the rice noodle rolls with a sweet, thick, dark prawn paste sauce that’s not entirely unlike Rojak sauce, topped with sesame seeds and fried shallots with Sambal on the side.

This restaurant can get pretty busy during weekends.

Fans of Penang style Chee Cheong Fun may find it difficult to come across in the Klang Valley, but there is a beacon of hope in a little stall at Restoran O&S in Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya.

Here you can get your fix of “proper” Chee Cheong Fun that hits all the right spots. The sauce is thick and flavourful with a hint of peanut butter but it’s not overly sweet.

The Chee Cheong Fun itself is soft and smooth, exactly how it should be. This restaurant gets busy on weekends, so be prepared to share tables with total strangers.
